Update on installation of a new automated car parking system

As you may remember the University previously announced the introduction of a new automated parking system, and we are now in a position to provide you with more information ahead of the system going live on 20 November. ??

Highfield Campus central area and library

To enable the most efficient use of the University estate, including its available car parking, the University will shortly complete the installation of a new automated parking monitoring system.???

This new technology will enable the University to provide ‘live’ space availability updates for those coming to campus by car, either when they begin their journey to campus, or at the point of arrival. This is aimed at minimising the time spent hunting for spaces.???

The system will use ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology to support those staff with relevant permits, and help prevent the misuse of our parking facilities by non-permit users.????

The University has partnered with APCOA Parking to provide this service.???

Whilst you will notice signage and cameras across our estate the University is taking a phased approach to launching the system. Over the coming weeks the University will be testing the new system ahead of the full launch on Wednesday 20?November. ?

With the arrival of this new parking system, the University will be working towards re-instating parking permit charges in the New Year. This reintroduction will be after a hiatus of four years, since the start of the COVID pandemic.???

The University will provide information on the cost of the various rates for parking later in the Autumn, prior to the full system launch.??

How will the Automatic Number Plate Recognition system work???

For people who qualify for a permit, you will need to re-apply via the APCOA parking portal by 20 November. The portal will currently require you to input your postcode and details about your vehicle.?

Once the system is fully operational in the New Year, you will not be required to complete any further steps. The system will record your entry and exit from your chosen University car park and the relevant payment will then be deducted from your bank account automatically (via the chosen payment method you have uploaded onto the system). You will not have to log in to a website or app to pay for your parking.??

Enforcement will take place Monday to Friday from 8am until 5pm.??

How do I apply for a permit???

The University will require all current parking permit holders to reapply for their permit as well as any new staff wishing to park on campus. The University has removed the previous car parking management database over the summer, and all car parking permit holders must be registered for a permit using the APCOA parking portal by Wednesday?20 November to continue using the University’s car parks. Previously issued parking permits may not be recognised after this date.?

We realise that staff and students who qualify for a parking permit may have questions about the new system. The Parking Team have created a dedicated SharePoint site with a series of FAQ’s that hopefully provide you with the answers you require.?

If you have any further questions please do get in touch with the Parking Team via parking@soton.ac.uk and they will be happy to help.??
