The majority of our digital sequencing activity is delivered by the Illumina MiSeq sequencer. This versatile instrument carries out a range of applications including:
- Whole genome sequencing of small genomes
- RNA sequencing
- Amplicon sequencing
- ChIP-seq
- Methylation profiling
- Exome sequencing
- Custom target capture
- RADseq
The Illumina MiSeq offers a number of advantages including:
- The fast run time – results can be generated in 3–55 hours, depending on the read length and chemistry used
- Long read length – the MiSeq can generate paired-end reads of up to 300 bp in length, the longest Illumina reads currently available
- Up to 25 million read pairs can be generated per run - a total of 15 Gb data if a read length of 2x300bp is used
Other equipment
- Automated liquid handling capabilities, using the Biomek 4000 liquid handling robot and the Formulatrix Mantis automated liquid dispenser
- Roche LightCycler qPCR instruments
- Covaris M220 for reproducible DNA fragmentation
- Sample tracking using FluidX barcoded tubes
- Bioinformatics capabilities: we run a dedicated analysis server and filestore
- Biomek 4000 for assay development other than NGS
Staff
Dr Phylllis Lam - Associate Professor in Microbial Biogeochemistry within the School of Ocean and Earth Science.
Nicola Pratt ?-?Senior Research Technician, supervises the marine biology technical team and provides technical support in a wide variety of research areas.
Alison Baylay - Post-doctoral research fellow, specialises in developing methods and pipelines for marine metagenomic and transcriptomic studies using the illumina sequencing platform.?
